Diabetic Diet

Diabetics must learn to follow a diabetic diet plan in order to stay healthy. Often, when following the right meal plan, diabetic patients can control their blood sugar without the need for medications. There is much that is misunderstood about diabetic diets, though, and this can make following one difficult.

First, American diabetic diet plans focus on teaching the patient the difference between healthy food and food that has a high impact on the blood sugar. The goal of diabetic diets is to avoid those foods that cause blood sugar to rise and fall. Refined starches and sugars are some of the biggest culprits. For this reason, diabetic patients are told to avoid processed flours, sugars, and white rice. Whole grains are much better for the someone following a American diabetic diet.

Fiber is another important aspect of a diabetic diet plan. Diabetic patients must increase the amount of fruit, vegetables, and nuts that they consume. Also, diabetics must closely monitor how often they eat. Most diabetic patients need to eat small, healthy snacks every two to three hours during the day. This helps them avoid experiencing a blood sugar crash.

If you are a diabetic patient, the best way to ensure that you are able to stick to a diabetic diet plan is to shop for those foods that are good for your blood sugar. Avoid buying the sugary treats that might tempt you to go off of your diet. Instead, stock the pantries and refrigerator with foods that have a small impact on your blood glucose levels, and make sure that you eat frequently so that your blood sugar stays where it should be.
