Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are a serious problem in today's diet-crazed society. There is even a part of our culture that considers themselves to be "pro eating disorders." Those who are pro eating disorders claim that they see nothing wrong with the behavior. The problem is, however, that eating disorders are extremely dangerous on the body and on the emotions of the people who struggle with them.
If you are wondering if you know someone with an eating disorder, you should know that there are not always visible symptoms of eating disorders, because those with eating disorders are experts at covering their tracks. However, some of the common symptoms of eating disorders that you may notice include:
- Sudden change in weight
- Obsession with body image
- Obsession with content of food (particularly caloric content)
- Frequently visiting the bathroom after eating
- Visible aversion to food
- Hiding food
- Eating in secret
If you notice any of these symptoms of eating disorders in someone you love, then you need to encourage them to get help right away. Many times eating disorders are an indication of a deeper emotional problem. If depression is the cause an antidepressant may help. There is promise that eating disorders and Prozac may be a good combination. The sooner the person struggling with the condition gets help, the less likely it will be that serious physical damage will occur, so do what you can to get your loved one the help he or she needs.
