Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is a diet based on the foods and cooking styles found among those who live near the Mediterranean Sea. Doctors have known for a long time that the residents of this region typically have healthy hearts. Recent research indicates that the foods that are consumed in this region are actually quite good for the heart.

The Mediterranean diet menu focuses on choosing the right kinds of fats, rather than avoiding fats altogether. Fresh vegetables and fruits are also an important part of the Mediterranean diet. In fact, if you were to get a copy of Mediterranean diet menus, you would find that those on the meal plan are eating a tremendous amount of fruits and vegetables.

The fats that are included in the Mediterranean diet menu are good fats, such as olive and canola oils. Also, small servings of nuts are a main part of the diet plan. Of course, since the Mediterranean region is known for its seafood, fish is going to be a main staple of any copy of Mediterranean diet plans that you find. Fish is eaten at least once a week on this diet.

The Mediterranean diet does avoid certain foods as well. Those on this eating plan often avoid red meat. Also, dairy that is high in fat is avoided. The cheese consumed on this diet is usually goat cheese, rather than cheese from cow's milk. The diet appears to be so healthy that the American Heart Association is currently studying the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet menu to see if they want to recommend it to those struggling with heart disease in the United States.
