Skipping Breakfast Is Bad For Weight Loss

Many dieters think that skipping breakfast is a good way to lose weight. This seems like a good idea to them because, after all, they are avoiding consuming a huge amount of calories they would normally have. This idea, however, almost always backfires. Breakfast, as is always said, is the most important meal of the day, and this is definitely true for those who are looking to lose weight.

When you wake up after a long night of sleeping, your blood sugar is going to be low. Breakfast replenishes this, which means that it gives you energy for your day. You will be more productive as you head to work or school, because breakfast makes you think and work better.

However, that does not directly attribute to weight loss. Sure, being more productive at work is a good goal, but if you need to lose weight it is likely not your most important consideration. Keep in mind that research has shown time and time again that people who eat breakfast in the morning actually end up eating more nutritious foods throughout the day. Perhaps they crave fewer sugary foods because they start the day with stable blood sugar. The reason for this eating pattern is not yet known, but it does exist nonetheless.

Similarly, these studies have shown that people who eat breakfast every day are able to control their weight far better than those who don't. Again, the reason behind this is unclear, but it is still true. It makes sense, though, when you think about blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar levels get too low, your body begins to crave carbohydrates and sugary foods. Since you wake up with low blood sugar levels, failing to eat breakfast only causes them to drop farther. By the time you hit lunchtime, you are craving carbs and sugar to get those blood sugar levels up. You are also quite hungry, and this makes you grab the convenient food, which is almost always less healthy.

Of course, eating a sugary or high-fat breakfast is not going to help you reach your weight loss goals. Breakfast is important, but what you eat for breakfast is also important. Choose fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and low-fat proteins for your breakfast foods. A meal made of a piece of fruit, one egg, and some whole grain toast with a tiny bit of butter is an example of a good, healthy breakfast. If you are serious about losing weight, get in the habit of starting each day with a healthy breakfast.
